“The mission of First Tee – Greater Richmond is to impact the lives of young people by providing educational programs that build character, instill life-enhancing values, and promote healthy choices through the game of golf. The program introduces kids to the game and its inherent values through programs in elementary schools, on golf courses and at youth centers around the country.
“First Tee – Greater Richmond will impact our community by positively influencing behaviors of young people and inspiring adults to mentor, coach, volunteer, donate to the cause and uphold mission, thus preparing youths to make sound decisions, exercise good character, and live satisfying, productive lives in which they can give back to the community.“
Through our core programming, The Life Skills Experience, First Tee – Greater Richmond provides youth with golf skills … and life skills through weekly instruction. Our coaches are trained in First Tee teaching methods which include inquiry-based instruction, open-ended questioning, and reflection. Junior golfers progress through seven skills levels based on attainment of both golf skills as well life skills. Participants enjoy low student to coach ratios, free practice balls, opportunities for supplemental play, leagues, tournaments and more. The Life Skills Experience has three seasons (Spring, Summer and Fall) each lasting between eight and ten weeks. The oldest participants at the highest skills level meet year round.
During the summer season, First Tee – Greater Richmond offers a variety of programs suited to a variety of schedules from week-long camps to weekly instruction in addition to leagues, championships and tournaments.
In the off season, First Tee – Greater Richmond endeavors to keep participants close and connected to the organization and their peers through movie nights, hands-on seminars focused on healthy habits and wellness, group outings and chapter socials.
First Tee – Greater Richmond is proud of its relationship with all Chesterfield County public schools, all Richmond city public schools, all Henrico County Public Schools, all Hanover County Public Schools and two independent schools. At these 127 schools, students in grades K through 5 are receiving life skills and golf skills through the National Schools Program. The First Tee National Schools Program is a school-based program in which elementary students are instructed in core values, healthy habits and golf skills by their own physical education teachers trained by The First Tee.
As a participant at First Tee – Greater Richmond, junior golfers have countless opportunities to showcase their golf skills and good character, some requiring an application process while others are open to all. These opportunities include First Tee Academies, First Tee Open at Pebble Beach, Future Leaders Forum, The Scholars Program, and much more.
At First Tee – Greater Richmond, we are committed to providing children with the skills, opportunities, environment and support necessary to become successful, contributing members of our community.
